The U.S. government has urged restaurant chains to take stronger voluntary steps to limit the marketing of unhealthy foods to children and promote healthier menu choices. The Move Against Harmful Advertising (MAHA) commission — established in 2025 — issued new guidance encouraging companies to reformulate products, improve portion sizes, and highlight more nutritious items in kids’ meals.

This initiative is part of a broader public health effort to address childhood obesity and raise nutrition standards across the foodservice industry. While the recommendations are currently voluntary, experts suggest they could form the basis for future regulations if the industry response proves inadequate.

Business Impact for SMEs

For small and mid-sized restaurants, this policy direction presents both challenges and opportunities. As consumers — particularly parents — become more health-conscious, transparency and ingredient quality are growing in importance. By adjusting recipes, sourcing cleaner ingredients, or offering lighter cooking methods, independent restaurants can differentiate themselves and build stronger trust with their communities. Early adopters of healthier menu strategies may also gain a regulatory advantage if stricter standards are introduced later.
