A new Microsoft Canada report reveals that artificial intelligence has moved from experiment to everyday tool for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across the country.
According to the findings, 71% of Canadian SMBs are already using AI or generative AI, with adoption rates climbing to nearly 90% among digital-native firms. Companies are leveraging AI for customer service automation, translation, content creation, and workflow efficiency.
The report highlights that investment in AI is set to rise sharply: nearly three-quarters of surveyed businesses plan to increase their spending, with 63% prioritizing generative AI solutions.
Productivity Gains, New Challenges
Over two-thirds of SMBs report measurable improvements in efficiency and productivity since adopting AI tools. However, 27% of respondents identified data privacy, cybersecurity, and staff training as ongoing challenges.
Different Priorities by Size
Micro-businesses (<10 employees): Focus on cutting costs and attracting new clients.
Small firms (50–99 employees): Increasing AI use in marketing and content creation.
Medium-sized businesses (100–250 employees): Expanding into cybersecurity, infrastructure, and talent readiness.
A Turning Point for SMBs
The study underscores a strategic shift: many Canadian SMBs now have formal AI strategies in place, moving beyond pilot projects into deployment. With strong infrastructure readiness and growing third-party partnerships, AI is expected to play a central role in the competitiveness of Canada’s small and medium business sector.
